Ramsgate’s main attraction is its beautiful coastline and harbour. The Harbour is the only Royal Harbour in the United Kingdom, bestowed by King George IV after he was taken by the hospitality shown by the people of Ramsgate when he used the harbour to depart and return with the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1821. In 2024 the harbour was designated a Heritage Harbour. Ramsgate’s Main Sands stretch as far as the eye can see and are just the place for a day on the beach.

There are many Regency and Victorian buildings in Ramsgate. There are over 200 listed buildings within the vicinity of the harbour. One of the most notable buildings is the 18th Century Townley House, designed by Mary Townley.

The town centre has a variety of shops ranging from high street shops such as Waitrose and Boots as well as a number of independent shops selling everything from cards and gifts to specialist goods.

There is a vibrant café culture especially around the Royal Harbour and Ramsgate Marina. There is a wonderful selection of bars and restaurants, serving many different cuisines including Italian, Turkish and French.

There is also a wide variety of entertainment available in Ramsgate. The town is home to the Granville Theatre which offers performances including tribute acts and pantomime. The town hosts Ramsgate week in August, which is an international sailing regatta and there are also croquet and bowls clubs in the town.

Ramsgate has very good transport links and the mainline train station is situated at the top of the town near the parish of St Lawrence. There are frequent direct trains to London St Pancras, Canterbury and Ashford. The direct train to London takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. There are also very good bus routes providing access to Thanet towns, Sandwich and Canterbury. Ramsgate is connected to the national road network, primarily through the A299 Thanet Way, which continues onto the A2/M2/M25 and London. The A256 provides a link to Dover for the ferry port and onwards to the A20 for the Channel Tunnel. There is also a National Express Route which runs between Ramsgate and London Victoria.
